Common Air Conditioner Problems & How to Fix Them

Most homeowners don’t think much about their air conditioners until they stop working. Air conditioning systems are an important part of our homes, but problems can happen with them.

In fact, most air conditioners have common problems like clogged filters, dirty coils, and broken fans. Even though these problems may seem small, they can do a lot of damage to your system and cost a lot to fix.

So, if you see any of these signs, here are 6 common problems with air conditioning and how to fix them.

#1. Dirty Filters

Your heating and cooling systems probably have the most trouble with dirty filters than with anything else. They keep dirt and dust inside the unit, which makes it work less well. This makes your air conditioner work harder and causes your energy bills to go up.

It’s important to clean or replace your filters often to keep your air conditioner running well. Depending on the type of filter you have, you may have to do this once a month or more.

If you don’t know how to clean or replace your filters, look in the owner’s manual that came with your air conditioner. Most of the time, the process is easy enough that anyone can do it.

So don’t let dirty filters stop you from enjoying your air conditioner’s cool, comfortable air. If you clean your filters, your air conditioner will work better and save you money on your energy bills.

#2. Clogged Coils

Clogged coils are a common air conditioner problem. Over time, dirt and dust can get stuck in the coils of your air conditioner. This can happen if the air conditioner isn’t cleaned often enough or if the filter isn’t changed often enough.

If the coils are dirty, the air conditioner won’t cool the air as well as it should. This can make the air conditioner work harder, which can cause energy bills to go up. You can clean the coils on your air conditioner in a few different ways. You can use a coil cleaning brush or a vinegar and water solution to clean them.

If there is a lot of dust and dirt on the coils, you may need to have them cleaned by a professional. This is something that only a trained air conditioner technician should do. If you clean your air conditioner’s coils often, they are less likely to get clogged. This will help your air conditioner keep running well and smoothly.

#3. Broken Fans

If your air conditioner isn’t working right, a broken fan could be to blame. Fans are a common problem with air conditioners, and they can lead to many different problems.

If the fan on your air conditioner is broken, it might not be able to move air around as it should. This can cause a lot of problems, such as:

– Your air conditioner may not be able to cool your house as well as it should.

– Your air conditioner may not be able to get rid of humidity.

– Your air conditioner might be making weird sounds.

If you think your air conditioner’s fan is broken, you should have a professional check it out. They can figure out what’s wrong and fix it if they need to.

#4. Overheating Compressor

What is the most common problem with an air conditioner? The most common problem with air conditioners is a compressor that gets too hot. The air conditioner’s heart is the compressor, which moves the coolant through the system. If the compressor gets too hot, it can hurt the air conditioner and make it stop working.

A few things can cause the compressor to heat up too much. One is if the room is too big for the air conditioner. The air conditioner will have to work harder to cool the room, and the compressor will get too hot. Another reason is that the air conditioner hasn’t been taken care of properly. If the air filter is dirty, it can block the flow of air, which can make the compressor get too hot.

If you think the compressor in your air conditioner is getting too hot, you should turn it off and call a technician. They can look at the air conditioner and fix any problems they find.

#5. Leaking Refrigerant Gas

When the liquid part of the refrigerant gets out of the system, this is called a leak. Leaks can happen anywhere in the system, but they happen most often near the evaporator coil. When the seal between the condenser and the evaporator breaks, leaks often happen. You should call a professional HVAC tech to fix this leak.

#6. Poor Performance

When your air conditioner doesn’t work well, it doesn’t do its job well. For example, you won’t save money on energy costs if your air conditioner doesn’t cool your home well enough.

Mold and mildew can also grow because of poor performance. You should call a professional HVAC contractor to figure out what’s wrong and fix it.

Conclusion

If your air conditioner isn’t working properly, there are a few things you can check before calling an air conditioning repair company. First, make sure the unit is plugged in and that the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped. Next, check the condenser coils to see if they’re dirty. If they are, clean them with a brush. Finally, check the air filter and replace it if it’s dirty. If none of these things fix the problem, then you’ll need to call a repairman.
